This course outlines a program that uses Arakelov theory and adelic metrics to derive results in both complex and non-archimedean geometry. The philosophy is analogous to the classical deduction of local class field theory from global class field theory: global methods can often illuminate and unify local phenomena. I will illustrate this approach through examples involving semi-stable vector bundles and polarized varieties.
